Established in 1976, Black History Month is recognized in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, among other nations. It is intended to celebrate the contributions blacks in the societies in which they live. In our case, it is the role that African-Americans have played – and continue to play – in American history and life. There are always the obvious famous African-Americans to focus on during this time: Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and others.
I have chosen to focus this year on the contributions of baseball legend Jackie Robinson. I hope you enjoyed the film that we watched in class, and I hope it made you think beyond the “obvious” African-Americans that we usually focus on during celebrations like this.
Use your comments here to express your ideas about the importance of Black History Month. Is it necessary to have a month dedicated to the contributions of black Americans? What about other months like this – Hispanic Heritage Month, Women’s History Month, and other such celebrations? Who are some of the African-Americans that you think best represent the meaning of this month? I want to hear what you think and feel. If you disagree with what someone writes, you should comment on it but you MUST remain respectful. I will not tolerate any personal attacks, rude, or inappropriate comments. Most importantly – HAVE FUN!!

black history month is important to me because . rosa parks , martin lutherking JR. mnalcom x ,jackie robinson. and harriet tuban made it possible .
i think that black history month is important becuase blacks have contributed so much to this country and its growth so i think we should thank martin luther king jr., for fighting segragation, rosa parks for her courage, jackie robinson, for proving that blacks have talents too, and countless others, for helping make this country what it is today
I do think that Black-History Month is very important, because it shows that we apperecate every thing that African Americans did to help our country become what it is today. Other celebrated months are important to i think. For example Women's History Month, is important because it shows that men are not the only people who have made history in the united states. Jackie Robinson, he broke the color barrier in baseball, Martin Luther king Jr., he wrote the "i have a dream" speach, and Rosa Parks, she didnt give up her seat on the bus, are some of the most important African American we think about during black history month. But those are not the only ones.
i think that black history is important because they deserve as much of anything as any other person in the world
they done so much like Rosa parks was amazing she showed everyone that they need to be treated exactly the same as everyone else
Good job so far. Keep it up.
Black history month is a celebration month of all the accomplishments of black people. When you think of black heroes you think of Jesse Owens, Sojourner truth, Garrett Morgan, W.E.B Dubois, Marcus Garvey, Wilma Rudolph, Paul Dunbar, Lena Horne, and Mark Dean who took a stand for what is right. Black history month is neccesary to celebrate because blacks have came a long way. Not only about 40 years ago blacks were put down. I am happy that there is a black history month because people need to understand the trials and obstacles blacks went through.
I think black history month is very important because if it weren't for people like Martin Luther King Jr. we would still have color barriers, and blacks wouldn't be able to the stuff they can now and it's not fair if they can't do the stuff that whites can. I think Rosa Parks is a big reason why we celebrate black history month, because she stood up to a white man even though she knew she was going to get in trouble. She stood up for what she believed in and i think that everybody should stand up for what they believe in even if they go to jail for it, i think that if you feel that something's not right in the world you should fight until whatever it is that's wrong in the world is fixed. That's exactly what Rosa Parks did and look how famous it made her!!
I think that Black History Month is important, becuase it reconizes what a minority has accomplished in America. Without Black History Month, America Would have no reason to congratulate African Americans for their accomplishments.
Hispanic and Women recodnition is also important in America.Hispanics and Women have often been looked down on, and these appreasiations often allow for change in the pregudice racially and pregudice assosiated with gender.
Without special times to reconize the minorities in America,Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and Jackie Robinsons lessons they taught would be in vain.
Like my other classmates, I Beleive that Special African Americans have contributed a major building block to Americas society.
These African Americans include Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and Jackie Robinson. Barrack Obama is also adding a major contribution to the African American society.
Black history month is very important to me because it is the time all of america gets to learn more about what black people contributed and continues to contribute to our country. However, I do think that history taught in class should include black history all year long in our history class. A lot of people, black and white only know about Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Malcom x, etc. But they may not know that the first open heart surgery was performed by a black man, the traffic light was invented by a black man, the super soaker and many other things that we use every day was invented by a black man. Jamerson B.
its important because it lets us remember those people that helped make this country it is today. a free nation to everybody and every race
I think that black history month is an important time because we can celebrate all of the people who made a difference even with a different skin color. Sure we've had many white people make differences but these people went beyond the distance of what they looked like on the outside but felt they could do goodbecause of what they feel on the inside.
I agree with my classmates about black history month is important to not just african americans ,but just everyone whites ,hispanic or any kind of religion or culture. I think MLK most impacted black history month because was one of many that hepled fight against slavery. Black history isnt just a month or celebration of any kind it is a special day were we come together as one. It is not just a holiday to me it is my history and life. By: Michael Collins

i agree with my feelow peirs however black history month is a month where "everyone" is apart of it.
I think Black History Month is very important, so that we can have a time to think about whats happened in the past. It's good that we have months like this to remember our history and how hard it was for so many people, and how it changed in the future. Martin Luther King Jr., Jackie Robinson, and Rosa Parks are all very important people who changed everything. It's amazing just how important Rosa Parks is, she showed us that everyone should be treated equally. And how Martin Luther King Jr. fought for their rights without violence. And how Jackie Robinson didn't respond to how cruel people were to him and did what he loved. There are a lot of others who stood up for themselves and what they believe in.
